A full schedule of beer tastings, seminars and other events make this suburban beer shop a natural hub for the Twin Cities brewing community. Its stock — which represents some of the most interesting stuff being brewed both locally and worldwide — changes frequently and reflects the personal passions of owner Jason Alvey.

Alvey knows his beer inside out, and The Four Firkins is an ideal place to visit when you’ve got a specific request you’re trying to fill or a menu you’d like to pair up; beer lovers will be impressed by the well-informed service and single-minded focus of the shop. Lovers of wine and mead will also find the odd intriguing bottle among the shops shelves.

Blue Max, Hennepin-Lake Liquors and Surdyk’s all boast collections of beer that rival or, in terms of sheer numbers, exceed that of The Four Firkins. But the level of hand-selection and the focus on beer alone set this shop apart.

BEST BET: The Four Firkins boasts a collection of Belgian beers that is staggering in its range and depth. It’s likely to charm even the dedicated drinker.
