Visitors to The Four Firkins in St. Louis Park know that the shop specializes in the rare, the offbeat and the exotic. Malheur Dark Brut — offered at a special rate for Heavy Table readers — certainly qualifies as all three. Sensual notes of chocolate, ginger and coffee make this beer an ideal companion for dessert or a special celebration. And its 12% ABV and 750ml size make this bottle of beer more akin to a fine wine in terms of potency and size.

“This beer is a perfect example of what we are trying to do here at The Firkins, it’s one of the rarest styles in the world,” says Jason Alvey, the shop’s proprietor. “It’s of outstanding quality and something most people will enjoy.”

Despite being a big-bodied Belgian, Malheur Dark Brut has a number of parallels to one of the wine world’s most beloved celebration beverages.

“Malheur Dark Brut is a beer that has been treated like Champagne,” says Alvey. “It’s very effervescent. But unlike Champagne, it has a roasty vanilla flavor   due to its barrel aging and the dark malt that is used.”

He adds: “It is a great beer for celebrations or even just impressing your friends — I guarantee almost none of them will have ever tried anything similar. You’ll be the most popular person at the party!”

The Four Firkins is such a great store. I have been going there since it opened last year and have learned a tremendous amount about beer from the guys there. They have really broadened my horizons!
