Editor’s Note: The HideOut is now closed.
Northeast Minneapolis has a new casual dining joint in the Waite Park neighborhood (north of St. Anthony Main and the clump of restaurants around Broadway Ave). The HideOut — a 28-seat breakfast and lunch spot — sits directly across from the Columbia Golf Club, tucked next to Hill Valley Boutique and Outta Place Tattoo parlor.
Standard classics make up the menu: grilled cheese, peanut butter and jelly, tuna salad. There are a few quiet spins, like a waffle garnished with Gray Duck Chai-infused whipped cream, and the BST (that’s bacon, spinach, and tomato). The Turkey Asparagus ($7.50, above) is a substantial lunch, with crunchy asparagus wrapped in cold turkey, and a slather of lemon mayo on hearty wheat bread. The smoothies are generous portions, too. A Green Ginger ($6, below) is packed with spinach, pineapple, Greek yogurt, honey, coconut milk, and a mild amount of spicy ginger.
The menu is limited and basic, but don’t let that be a dissuasion. The food is freshly prepared and the baked goods are made in house (think classics, like banana chocolate chip muffins). There’s coffee, all-day breakfast, salads, and sandwiches. And finally, we couldn’t let the cliche get away without a mention: Thanks to small perks like Wi-Fi, a patio, and a dog-friendly atmosphere (outside, that is), this seems like the perfect place to actually hide out.
