A truly good bagel is hard to find in most parts of the country – usually you’re stuck with a round piece of bread, or an over-chewy spare tire. But the Minneapolis-St. Paul scene gained a major lift a few years ago with the appearance of Rise Bagel Co. (which we profiled in 2014). After a few years of operating at pop-ups and markets, Rise will be opening a storefront in early 2017 at 530 North Third Street in the North Loop. It’s a move that could be a real game-changer in a metro area that struggles to get bagels right.

RISE BAGEL CO. TO OPEN FIRST STOREFRONT IN EARLY 2017

Sister duo brings classic, organic bagels to Minneapolis’ North Loop neighborhood

Jen and Kate Lloyd, sisters and self-described “bread heads,” have had a love affair with bagels from an early age. Inspired by their struggle to find a bagel they admired within state lines, they went on a mission.

Traveling from the bagel meccas of New York City and Montreal to San Francisco, they taste tested and learned from the very best—all in an effort to bring classic, old-world bagels home to Minnesota.

Since 2014, Rise has been filling a hole in the Twin Cities, participating as a vendor at the Kingfield and Fulton Farmers Markets and making pop-up appearances around the city. Its Everything bagel was named one of City Pages’ “100 Favorite Dishes” in 2015.

“It is time to take this next step and make our dream a full-time reality,” said Kate Lloyd, co-founder of Rise Bagel Co. “We are excited to establish roots in the North Loop neighborhood and become a daily destination for those who seek an elevated bagel experience.”

The new storefront, located at 530 North Third Street, is in the heart of the North Loop neighborhood on the corner of Sixth Avenue and North Third Street. Rise will occupy space on the first floor of the five-story building. Constructed in 1916, the building originally housed a candy factory operated by Roach Tisdale. Today its owned by Schafer Richardson and is home to a mix of commercial tenants. GRABEK
represented Rise in its property search.

Rise will continue baking during the build-out. Bagels will be available at the Wedge Co-op on November 6 and at Lowry Hill Meats on November 19. For more info, visit www.risebagel.com/calendar.

The only down side is, they only make them on Thursdays and Fridays.
