The Original on 42nd Has Closed

James Norton / Heavy Table

As per the gourmet sandwich shop’s Facebook page, The Original on 42nd closed its doors for good today after six months in business. We’ve been a few times since its opening and were consistently impressed – the sandwiches were expensive ($10-14) but made well with quality ingredients, and they offered a good value prospect. The Muffaletta (above) was killer. Started by Heartland vets Andy Lilja and Steph Kochlin, the Original was a pint-sized bastion of quality in its neighborhood, and its passing leaves a sandwich-shaped void in the cosmos.

Their Iowa pork sandwich was the best pork tenderloin I have ever eaten. I’ll miss this place.
