Manny’s Tortas Pork Loin

Hoagie, grinder, bánh mì, or panini — all boil down to two pieces of bread that “sandwich” any variety of ingredients. Most nations have their version; in Mexico, it’s the torta. A hard white roll stuffed with fillings and served hot or cold, the Mexican torta sounds like any other sandwich out there. Manny’s Tortas pork loin version, however, will challenge your understanding of what a sandwich tastes like…

In addition to its warm roll and thin, crisp pork loin, this sandwich showcases a multitude of layers — lettuce, tomato, cheese, avocado, onion, jalapenos, beans, and chipotle pepper mayo — pressed together in each tasty bite. For $7.45, which includes chips (unfortunately a bag of Lay’s), the sandwich makes for a quick and filling lunch. The torta’s only disappointment is the failure of the peppers to bring spice to the otherwise balanced and flavorful combination of ingredients.

The pork loin torta, along with several other varieties, can be found at either of the Manny’s Tortas locations — in the Midtown Global Market and in the Mercado Central. The third location on 27th and Lake closed recently due to the economy, but owner Manny Gonzalez (below), who moved to the US 26 years ago from Mexico City, asserts that the remaining locations are still going strong. Gonzalez is planning a celebration for the 10th anniversary of his first location in Mercado Central on July 31.

This is indeed a very good sandwich. Also try Manny’s chorizo and egg torta. Hmmmm….it’s been a while. I sense a trip to Manny’s in my future.

I enjoy going to Manny’s Tortas. I went to the Lake Street location often and was sad to see that one close, but I’m glad that the Midtown Global Market location is doing well.

I’d just like to add that Manny is one of the nicest guys around as well. He’s been very supportive of the organization my wife works for, which makes buying his tortas even better :)
