Gandhi Mahal in Longfellow, Minneapolis

Minneapolis-St. Paul has long been a relative desert for fans of the creamy, deeply spiced cuisine typical of parts of northern India — there’s been a real lack of the food known as “Mughal,” after the 16th Century Mongol conquerors who once controled most of the modern-day Indian state. Gandhi Mahal brings Mughal comfort food to the Longfellow neighborhood with a vengeance, offering rich curries, fried appetizers and a novel lassi bar that includes sweet, salty, Badami (almond and pistachio flavored) and the more familiar mango version of the yogurt-based soft drink.

Decor is exotic and tasteful, service is warm, friendly and efficient, and the value is excellent.

BEST BET: The silken, deeply spiced and pleasantly sweet Shahi King Korma is emblematic of the best Gandhi Mahal has to offer.
